What irritates me is the Silicon Valley culture of greed and lying. They promised free storage to undercut competitors. When the competitors are diven out of business, they start charging.
And I know that if I pay, I still won't have access to any support, unlike fastmail, which I have used on various projects.
And... gmail doesn't provide any mass delete tools, so it's not actually about storage.
Which one has better user/technical support, including account recovery? This comparison didn't discuss it.

I have used fastmail on various projects, and support was always prompt and from a real person. So I will probably go with them. I haven't used proton.

When I signed up, they promised unlimited storage. They reneged. Why would I trust them now?
So it's fastmail or proton if I'm paying.
