I know many software engineers in their 50s that refused to become managers. One layoff after 50 and most of them had to change careers because many companies don't want to hire 50-something engineers, but will hire a manager.
On top of this, you can take management skills to almost any company and you don't have to continually know all of the details of the latest framework/software fad to get a job.

I'm one of them. Being a manager is a job I find incredibly unpleasant. Doing it as a career would be a real nightmare.
