Adding more context for those that wont there at the time. Nearly 99.9% of execs and MBA thought it was a dumb move. The world is moving to internet ( 2000 was Dot Com bubble ) and Dell selling everything without a store. Why would anyone want to open retail store.
Even when Apple succeeded they still thought it was a fad.
The sad thing is Apple Store went down hill as soon as Steve Jobs passed away. With Ron Johnson left just before he passed away no one picked up what Steve envisioned the store was suppose to be. It is now nothing more than a cost centre on Apple's spreadsheets.

The original Tysons Corner store (shown in that Steve Jobs video in the article) closed a couple years ago and moved to a different spot in the mall.
Even before relocating it had gotten a major remodel at one point, when they took out the classic black pillars at the entrance.
