I'm honestly more interested in the characters who do these things in the face of legal consequences.

What makes someone more interested in fighting the good fight for ... deepfakes?

We've seen some folks in various areas of the piracy scene do the same facing long odds and consequences.

It's interesting that these are the fights they pick.

Lot of folks out there who believe if they can do something, they should be able to or free to, regardless of harm caused. It’s unfortunate.

Title aside, I want folks protecting me from people who wield tech without concern for other humans. Certainly, we can discuss who we need protecting from more: governments or tech folks. My position is both, depending on the day. Tech's position seems to be "if I do it with code, the rules don't apply." Not good, and why regulations and laws are needed to tightly constrain Tech. When ethics are optional, checks and balances are required. There won't be perfection, but it is necessary to protect humans from Tech.
