Synthetic aperture sonar has been around for some time. I was first exposed to multibeam bathymetry 25ish years ago and an acoustic camera at least 15 years ago. Maybe this is something with better specs?

“You forget that it’s not a photo, but an image re-created from sound,” Gini says.

This is something that always struck me about some of the sonar images. They can look a lot like photos but there are defensively differences. For instance in the picture at the top of the article it looks like a photo taken from directly above the wreck. In fact the sonar was above the top of the image pointing down to the bottom of the image (evident by the shadow). Sonar is pretty amazing.

One thing I would really like to see is this same tech used in air. You should (I think) be able to get similar results.

There's papers on this. Google AirSAS.

Been on sas biz for 12 years, resolution is much better than multibeam at range.
