Now probably is a good time to retire for those who are anywhere close to it.

Whatever comes in the coming few years will be something no one in the industry will miss. Just the endless grind for less money and less respect and less impact than before, with more competition. Things will eventually fix - they always do - but those who have to participate in it will be seriously burnt out.

I agree. The industry has also shifted a whole lot, from being something I took pride in being a part of to something that I'm embarrassed by. That may correct itself in the long run, but it's going to get worse before it gets better. It's probably well past time for me to find another line of work (and not because of genAI).

Wow! My thoughts too exactly - especially after working for decades and finding that the art of software design and building is literally going to dogs - for better or worse - and everything is 'just a prompt away'. Attended a webinar just yesterday where this interview prep company has pivoted into helping others up-level and pushing the AI/ML FOMO agenda - and telling how AI-enabled people will obsolete non-AI enabled people. The proverbial rat race has taken a new turn.

I think nothing changed here. It was never meant to be good. Software - just because it can be infinitely copied for free - is little but an inequality engine, and thus is bound to work by ripping the social fabric apart. I always knew that and i'm fine with it. It's evil, plain and simple.
