Kayfabe? I mean, if anyone were to do something like this strictly for the lulz, its got to be these two jokers.
krapp•1d ago
OK at this point I've seen the specific term "kayfabe" be brought up often enough and on enough platforms in regards to Trump and Musk's shenanigans that it's legitimately weird. Who's writing this script?
salawat•1d ago
It may come from Jon Stewart who has used wrestling analogies in reference to other parts of Trump's foreign policy. When looked at through a wrestling lens, the surreality and absurdity of this admin at least...has precedent, I guess?

Isn’t it a meme? Like in the literal sense. The spat was dramatic and rather sudden, coming from two public figures who are known showboaters. It seems like kayfabe and it’s a bit amusing to call it that, especially when it’s not. That’s a perfect meme, meaning “idea that spreads naturally”.
krapp•17h ago
Maybe, and maybe I'm just out of touch with the memes and falling victim to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, but it isn't even that common a word, and all of a sudden everyone it seems like everyone using it. And Google Trends definitely shows a spike in usage[0]. It's probably my own paranoia but when I see the exact same phrase (like "roaring economy") being used by a lot of people it seems like propaganda, especially given how deeply manipulated and controlled every form of media and communication is nowadays.

For instance.. why did everyone all of a sudden care so much about the price of eggs during the last election? There's no way that was entirely organic.

> it isn't even that common a word, and all of a sudden everyone it seems like everyone using it

In this particular case, it is a very unique word. I don't know of any that even come close to meaning the same thing. People with a desire to express their observations may find only a single word to do so. FWIW, I was familiar with the word already and I've similarly notice a seeming uptick in use on this site.

> For instance.. why did everyone all of a sudden care so much about the price of eggs during the last election? There's no way that was entirely organic.

I see your point and I think you're on the right track. It's memetics. Egg prices being high is a meme. The public spat between Donald Trump and Elon Musk being a kayfabe performance is a meme. Neither is necessarily an engineered meme.

>why did everyone all of a sudden care so much about the price of eggs during the last election?

That seems like a prime example of a small-talk item that many people could relate to, and it just happens to reach viral proportions. I'd say it would be similar to "Polar Vortex":

Kayfabe, in itself, is improvised. The wrestler develops their character and performs it live. The wrestling federation will help fine-tune the performances and set long-term arcs, but a new wrestler generally develops their own character at the start.

The outcomes of the matches are scripted, and so is the story leading up to the match, but "kayfabe" is about what the wrestler does any time they're in public. It refers specifically to the fact that they always practice it in public, and never drop the character.

As it applies to this... there are accusations that this is being plotted out by various nefarious actors, but I don't think so. We have comically oversized, outlandish performances -- possibly different from who they are when the cameras aren't on them, but the cameras are always on these two. People want the kayfabe, and they seem happy to provide it.

insane_dreamer•1d ago
Fun to watch this meltdown in realtime. It was always going to happen someday, didn't expect it to be this soon and this public.

They act like two little kids. "Did you say thank you today?"

jethronethro•1d ago
To be honest, I wasn't expecting the cracks to show until July at the earliest. Guess that's what happens when you put two brittle, volatile personalities in a room. How long before Musk challenges Trump to a fight?
GianFabien•1d ago
"The Battle of the Egos" - grab the popcorn and beer.

Why don't they do a cage fight challenge? Would be even better for TV ratings.

lazystar•1d ago
these two are masters of social media. occams razor suggests that they planned this in advance for some other purpose. my guess is theyre hoping this will cause tesla stock to rise.
southernplaces7•16h ago
Gee, nobody could have predicted this coming. It's not like two utterly self-absorbed, narcissistic egomaniacs working together would ever, you know, normally have a falling out.
southernplaces7•14h ago
In this case Musk should be careful if he cares about keeping what he has. It's Trump who, pun intended, holds all the trump cards. Musk can threaten some random expo of bad stuff about Trump but the president has been getting sprayed for years with his own shitty past activities and has pretty much built an entire persona of armour that lets them slide off like water from a duck's back. Trump's core of supporters loves him enough to not give a shit whatever new dirt they hear anyhow, while just about nobody, even among republican types, likes a socially unpleasant techbro on steroids like Musk.

Legally too, Trump can absolutely hammer even someone as rich as Musk with all kinds of tools through his FCC, FTC, AG's office and Justice Department. Musk can... tweet about how angry he is and share a document or two. Hardly a good balance of competing powers. There are the vital SpaceX tech contracts working in Musk's favor, but they're not an insurmountable problem for the notably reckless Trump admin.

jfengel•13h ago
Musk posted: "The Trump tariffs will cause a recession in the second half of this year."

Uh, we are almost certainly already in a recession. The tariffs will almost certainly exacerbate it, but just the fear of them is reducing GDP right now.
