RustDesk: The Fast Open-Source Remote Access and Support Software

I’ve been using RustDesk for years, always thinking a server was required. But I recently discovered that’s not the case. If you install Tailscale on both the client and the remote machine, you can skip the server entirely. Once both devices are connected through the Tailscale VPN, you can simply use the assigned IP address in the Remote ID field.
ahofmann•7mo ago
That is a very useful information, thank you!

My employer currently pays a lot of money for TeamViewer licenses, just to connect to some internal machines.

jsisto•7mo ago
If you use Tailscale why wouldn’t you just RDP?
ahofmann•7mo ago
I always wondered how trustworthy rustdesk is. Isn't software like this the perfect attack vector for three letter agencies like free VPNs?
abound•7mo ago
Is the argument that entire categories of software should not be used because they could be backdoored? That'd seemingly rule out messenging apps, as well as the examples you mentioned (VPNs, remote viewing tools)

I think a more reasonable approach is to understand your threat model and act accordingly. If you need to remotely access a PC and are concerned about TLAs, maybe audit the source code directly. Or like another commenter noted, do direct IP connection between two devices on a Tailscale network.

I would also like to know. They give some sketch vibes, unfortunately (even compared to some alternatives), because otherwise the offering looks pretty good!
ahofmann•7mo ago
So, I searched a bit and this github issue just give bad vibes: https://github.com/rustdesk/rustdesk/discussions/6444

Cant use in on wayland !! Everysingle time need to approve it on the machine !! Temoves the purpose of remote !! Got a nano kvm and i am happy !
xupybd•7mo ago
Yeah, I have a x11 config for Rustdesk. I figure they will get Wayland support at some point.

Teamviewer pissed me off when they stuffed up my payment, reversed the charges without telling me, then sent me a letter saying they were taking me to court.

I found rust desk after that and have sworn never to pay Teamviewer a cent.
