In 1979, Iranian women protested mandatory veiling (2022)

How strictly is the veil still enforced? After the U.S./Israeli sneak attack I saw video of a woman on the streets of Tehran, with no veil, loudly demanding that the Ayatollah lift the fatwa on developing nuclear weapons so that Iran could defend itself from further aggression. She didn't seem to be in any fear of reprisal or consequences.
thomassmith65•7mo ago
The UN claims morality laws tightened up again after the 2022 protests. Enforcement probably depends on the region of Iran, whether it's a high profile woman, and luck.

Iranian security forces have escalated pre-existing patterns of physical violence, including beating, kicking, and slapping women and girls who are perceived as failing to comply with the mandatory hijab laws and regulations, according to the report from the UN’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran.

State authorities have also increased monitoring of hijab compliance in both the public and private spheres through the increased use of surveillance, including drones.

> defend itself from further aggression

Subtle. :-/

cempaka•7mo ago
I'm just repeating the woman's own words, but see nothing off base in that part of her perception of the situation.
thomassmith65•7mo ago
Do you have the link? It sounds like an interesting clip.
tguvot•7mo ago
i think there are more cases and clips of iranians asking israel to strike regime facilities and chanting death to khamenei
thomassmith65•7mo ago
Thanks. Actually the part that piques my curiosity is that they featured a woman without a head-covering on state tv. I have heard that that is common in college towns and other urban centers. I just assumed it wouldn't be tolerated on tv.
tguvot•7mo ago
things over there "a bit of in disarray". they probably use any piece of propaganda they can. they been airing ai generated videos of devastating missile strikes on israel and yesterday they claimed that they have complete airspace control over israel
cempaka•7mo ago
Disinformation is a standard weapon for both sides in any major conflict but I’ve been following closely and haven’t seen this. Do you have links to either of these things from official Iranian sources?

There’s no need for AI to show the devastation in Tel Aviv, it’s real enough.

cempaka•7mo ago
lol this is nonsense, let’s see them
