A key factor: "Populist parties usually have a low degree of internal democracy and a centralized structure. Strategic decisions are made by a small leadership group, which increases the likelihood of radical strategic demands."
Populists claim to represent the people, but populist parties internally are less democratic than normal parties. It boils down to "I represent the people."

It's funny. People in the US hate Congress but they reliably re-elect their congressman. People don't really like process -- to me being involved with an organization that uses Robert's Rules feels like a waste of time. So could people feel more represented by an individual or small group with an obscure process than they do with an open organization that has a lot of arguing and barguing? Yeah!
