Show HN: 120 HN – A free native, cross-platform Hacker News client

https://120.dev/120-hn
1•120-dev•7mo ago
I've built 120 HN, a fully native Hacker News client with a focus on performance and consistency across platforms (macOS - ready, Windows and Linux - coming soon). Every component is implemented from scratch, aiming for a fast and responsive experience.

Key features:

- Native UI with smooth scrolling and minimal interface - Clean reading and comment view - AI assistant integration using your own OpenAI API key - Support for Claude and local LLMs is planned

The app is currently free to use. I'm sharing it here to gather feedback from the HN community and would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

120 HN is part of a suite of native tools I'm building. Another app in the suite, [120 AI Chat](https://120.dev/120-ai-chat), is already available with support for multi-threaded conversations and multiple AI models. Upcoming tools include [120 Email](https://120.dev/120-email), an AI-assisted email client, and [120 Table](https://120.dev/120-table), a table UI for working with data and generating charts.

Feedback is welcome. Let me know what you think.

> AI

Next.

HN is already fast. Simplicity is it's selling point. Anything put on top of that can only make it worse, most of all "AI".

I wouldn't shit on it if it were a hobby project, but spouting "cross-platform" when it's not, and coming right at me with "currently free to use". Gross, no thanks. There's already too many people charging money to make everything decent, incredibly worse.

120-dev•7mo ago
Appreciate your honesty—totally fair that 120 HN may not be useful for you. My goal was to build a native HN experience with solid performance and a clean UI. The AI features are optional, and while not for everyone, they can be helpful to others who choose to use them.

For now, 120 HN is free and likely will stay that way unless there's enough interest to justify adding more features and ongoing work. It's a side project while I continue building other native apps at 120 Studio.

If you do decide to give it a try, I’d be happy to hear your thoughts—critical or not.
