I think the real problem is that we won't have any real reliable way to determine whether they are sentient, or just appear to be sentient. And I've also concluded that it doesn't matter; anything which demonstrates enough capability should be treated as sentient (unclear what those capabilities would be). A Philosophical Stochastic Parrot-Zombie is indistinguishable from a living being with a subjective mind.
