I'm curious why we couldn't apply some HVDC tech to build solid state transformers. The arguments against always seem narrowly focused on specific devices instead of systems of devices.
Clearly a single semiconductor can't handle kV levels of power, but a thousand of them in series can. This is the fundamental principle behind a lot of HVDC conversion architecture.
