Separated men are nearly 5x more likely to take their lives than married men

Have they ruled out “suicidal men 5x more likely to become divorced”? I’m skeptical that they have because I can’t think of how they would, and the other direction seems quite plausible too.
kashunstva•6mo ago
The paper being referenced was a systematic review and meta-analysis rather than new data. Given the inherent methodological and population differences between original studies , I doubt that much could be said about causality; it’s pretty conclusively an association though. And that’s probably enough basis on which to be vigilant and target support if you’re a therapist. But, yes, I suspect it’s more complicated than A->B. It was in my own case that nearly could have been a subject of this study.
_mlbt•6mo ago
Divorce can be very traumatic for men. Usually the best case scenario is that the man loses half his financial assets, gets 50% custody of his children, and is on the hook for significant child support payments.

This completely blows up their lives. It can be even worse if the man doesn’t see it coming.

I would go further - mentally unstable people are unlikely to have a relationship and more likely to commit suicide
davydm•6mo ago
Personally, my responsibility to my family has been one of, if not the primary reason I'm able to type this out.

Many people will read happiness values out of suicide stats, not accounting for stubborn bastards like me who just keep plodding forward out of duty.

loa_in_•6mo ago
We dug ourselves into the hole of ever increasing progress, recruitment based of how much stress you can handle and we'll be worse for it as a civilisation.
bendigedig•6mo ago
> Keep up the good work!

Sounds a little tone deaf/hollow to me.

I'd encourage people to find ways to look after themself so that they don't feel like they have to keep stubbornly plodding on.
