I see this trend in many cities - removing amenities that actually add to the benefits of living in that city, all to accommodate or attract a larger population. What’s wrong with just having towns and cities remain the size they were and continuing to support the quality of life they had? Not everything has to be affordable. People can also move to one of the many low cost of living towns that exist if that’s a priority, rather than forcing cities to lose their way of life.
