Let me be clear that I do not agree fully with this article, but I think it contains many great observations about day-to-day realities for many people.

This line resonated with me:

They carry debt like ankle weights: student loans, medical bills, credit cards, each payment a small surrender of autonomy.

In my early days of psychotherapy practice.

Though retired now, I will always remember the sense of helplessness that overcame me, when working with clients, who for me, were struggling with the despair of life, not because they had some deep seated psychological problem, though most were prescribed medication, all they needed was an extra £20 each week to put food on the table for their children, to be able to pay their heating bills, to go on holiday. like the rest of us do.

I quickly came to realise that psychotherapy would never be able to offer what these people really needed. Yes, we could hammer away and try to find a solution by reframing their problems, but ultimately they would still be hungry, cold, humiliated, homeless, depressed and broken.
