Europe accepted US hegemony, satisfied with the prospect of being henchmen to Empire, without once considering what to do if and when the hegemon ever began to turn on its subordinates. Europe needs a Charles De Gaulle, but first has to clear out the Atlanticists stooges who currently make up the majority of the European political elite

And the US is doing its damnest to convince it to buckle down and develop without relying on its (recent) traditional partner. Given this incentive (or opportunity if you prefer), it’s up to the Europeans to deliver.
