Ask HN: Help with my project ( should I continue) ?

3•robomiri•7h ago
Hello! For some time I am working on a Photos app as alternative to Google Photos, but hosted in EU and with E2E encryption. The development is going good, already have an android app and a web version (it is a solo project, I am the developer and all).

My question is, do you think it would be feasible? Is it there enough space to market and sell it?

I did it because I wanted an encrypted system, hosted in EU and, as I have children and lot of photos, I want them to be safe and private.

I want to mention that even if that there is no way to sell it as subscription, I am still happy to have built it, I can use it for me and my family in cloud with a home server backup. (as every developer, I have a ton of project like this :) )

I just want to give me an idea (as I know how big this community is) as if there is any value in it.

Thanks!

It's feasible, just not sure it's profitable.

Your biggest issue is going to be EU/UK (un)encryption laws now that Switzerland is breaking.

A standalone home/cloud VM server would probably be easier than a full cloud based google like system that can easily be throttled at it's one source by any EU agency/government.
