Free and open are always going to take a lot longer to get to the solution than a well funded profitable business. Where ever money can be made the open solution will be outcompeted with better resourcing put towards the problem and some of those things will be permanently handed over and make money for their owners. I think the desktop having so many open source tools is largely just because big business mostly moved onto winning the web.

TBL's book's title is "This Is For Everyone" — taking out "This Is" here seems inapt.
