I am only tracking two things these days. I mostly gave up on all other habit tracking for similar reasons to what the article mentions. For those things I did naturally, the tracker wasn’t needed and it was a silly extra step. For those things I wasn’t doing, the tracker didn’t motivate me, it was just one more step. I’d also forget to check things off, so it wasn’t an accurate representation of reality.
One of the things I still track is how often I drive my car, but I was able to automate the tracking, so it’s passive. Whenever my phone connects to CarPlay, that item gets checked off in my habit tracker. I’ve needed a new battery in my car every 10 months for the past several years. I’m told everything seems fine, so I’m curious if I simply don’t drive it enough, hence the tracking. Trying to remember to go into an app every time I drove wasn’t working, so the Shortcuts automation with CarPlay has worked perfectly to capture this data without effort.
