If A.I. Can Diagnose Patients, What Are Doctors For?

Automated decision systems will probably have better margins of error, but who’s responsible for misdiagnosis or miscommunication? It won’t be fair to apply the entire burden of a mistake on a doctor if the tools they’re being advised to use are also fallible. A new insurance model will likely result from increased AI use in medical settings, one where developers and deployers may have to share some liability. Why shouldn’t that be the case?
tene80i•4mo ago
Couldn’t you have a system where the AI makes a recommended diagnosis but a doctor needs to be the one to actually diagnose? Then you have expert oversight and accountability backed up by tooling that can help with their blind spots.
nis0s•4mo ago
Sure, but if the goal is you’d like to reduce physician case load, then some patients might be seen by some combination of registered nurses and/or AI. Regardless, accountability frameworks and liability models will need to account for offloading decisions and work from human oversight.

Currently in Britain's NHS, almost all first visits to a GP practice consist of contact ONLY with a PA/RN, who takes a history, performs an examination, and prescribes medication. Seeing a physician is the exception rather than the rule. And referrals to a specialist require a wait of on average 6 months.

>One in three GPs in England do not work in NHS, says BMJ study

>Doctors warn hospitals under pressure as NHS waiting lists rise

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3dr52l1j3yo

>The latest monthly data also showed the number facing very long waits to start routine treatment had increased.

>There were 1,429 patients waiting more than 18 months in July, up from 1,103 in June, though down sharply compared to last year.

“Learning how to deploy A.I. in the medical field, Rodman told me later, will require a science of its own. Last year, he co-authored a study in which some doctors solved cases with help from ChatGPT. They performed no better than doctors who didn’t use the chatbot. The chatbot alone, however, solved the cases more accurately than the humans.”

A couple decades ago, the same study was done with chess grandmasters and chess programs. The chess programs + grandmasters scored worse than the chess programs alone.
