Show HN: I build a desktop tool to convert files & edit PDFs/audio/video offline

https://convertfast.co/
2•amsaleque•4mo ago
Hi HN,

I built ConvertFast, a desktop tool for file conversion and utilities that works entirely offline.

The motivation came from being frustrated with online converters — they upload files to unknown servers, have unclear privacy policies, impose file size limits, and are slow when handling multiple files. I wanted something private, fast, and unlimited.

What it does:

Converts files locally, no uploads or internet required

Supports 2,500+ formats (PDFs, images, audio, video, etc.)

Batch processing: convert dozens or hundreds of files at once

PDF toolkit: merge, split, compress, extract pages

Image tools: batch editing, watermarks, EXIF management

Audio/video utilities: trimming, speed control, audio extraction

It’s cross-platform and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I’d love feedback on the idea, the implementation, and features that might be missing. Thanks for taking a look!

Hey everyone,

My name is Ahmed. The idea for ConvertFast came from being frustrated with online converters. Uploading sensitive files like bank statements or personal photos to random servers always felt risky, and many services are slow, limited in size, or unclear about privacy.

On top of that, how many times have you searched for “how to convert PDF,” “how to merge PDF,” or “how to extract audio from video”? That constant hopping between websites inspired building a single, local solution.

ConvertFast is a desktop app that handles all conversions locally and fully offline — no uploads, no cloud, no limits. It supports almost every format you might need in daily or professional life, and there are no file size restrictions.

It’s not just a file converter:

PDF toolkit: merge, split, compress, extract pages

Image tools: batch edits, watermarks, EXIF management

Audio & video utilities: trimming, speed control, audio extraction

The goal was to put all these tools in one place so you don’t have to waste time online or worry about privacy. Everything happens on your computer, fast, secure, and unlimited.

Happy to answer questions about formats, features, or why certain workflows were included!

As a person that relies on Adobe Media Encoder to make things if this really works the way I want it to you'll have done a great deed for the world. I'm probably preaching to the converted here but I'm aghast at how I have login to Adobe Cloud just to access the relatively simple features I need for say like converting an video into a gif or something. I'll give it a try in weeks to come.

Thanks for a worthwhile offering buddy. Here's to you!

amsaleque•4mo ago
Thanks a lot for the kind words! I totally get what you mean — having to sign in to Adobe Cloud just to do something as simple as turning a video into a GIF feels like overkill. That frustration is exactly what pushed me to make ConvertFast: no logins, no internet, just open the app and get the job done.

I’d be curious to hear how it stacks up against your Adobe Media Encoder workflow once you give it a try. If there are specific conversions or settings you use often (like GIF export presets, compression levels, etc.), let me know — I’d love to make sure ConvertFast covers those cases smoothly.

Appreciate the support, and I hope it really does save you some time (and sanity) once you try it out!
