A lot are talking about how useless the UN is due to vetos and such. But bringing parties in conflict together allows for such "after hours" talks that lead to real impact, and I think that aspect should not be dismissed.
This can be with the aid of neutral third parties which can provide a place where they can talk in private, QUNO[1] is one example I know of.
Even the Security Council is more than just votes. The entire thing is a place to talk, and it's where deals get made.
It's hard to take somebody's opinion on the UN seriously when they don't seem to know anything about it.
