There's a big leap here that the profit from one sport should be invested in another. Why should the profitable football team prop up another sport.

There is no particular reason necessitates it. It merely depends on your end goal; is your highest priority to maximize profits or to strengthen the foundation of your academic/scholastic institution? There’s a perspective where those objectives overlap, but they are not the same thing.
