I'm finding it hard to feel sympathy for DJI. They have had five years to develop a drone system that doesn't require a cloud connection to their servers. To build firmware update delivery system that didn't require a cloud connection. To develop drone control module and video feeds that don't stream the entirety of their operations to offshore servers.
The issue here is a company insistent on building toys, tools, and appliances which all contain military grade surveillance and data metrics systems that require a connection to DJI servers in order to function.
While I am no proponent of the US hypocrisy regarding digital freedoms; you need not bother auditing a company that has had half a decade to demonstrate they aren't an arm of if a foreign surveillance state yet actively release software with even more aggressive phone home functions.
