Green Party London Assembly member Zack Polanski recently claimed that the Roman Empire prospered due to “open borders, mass immigration and diversity” before falling because of “huge wealth inequality and corrupt leadership.” While politically convenient for contemporary debates, this narrative fundamentally misrepresents Roman history and reduces one of antiquity’s most complex civilizations to a simplistic morality tale.
