New Trump envoy says he will serve to make Greenland part of US

Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said the territory was willing to cooperate with the United States and other countries, but only on the basis of mutual respect.

While most Greenlanders favour eventual independence from Denmark, opinion polls show overwhelming opposition to becoming part of the US.

With a population of only 57,000 I'm not sure how independence could work. It seems to me that such a large geography with so few people would need to depend on at least one other country for protection etc.

In diplomatic terms, this is nothing less than a declaration of war.

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland have given a joint press conference. This is insane, but since admitting that makes us really uneasy, my prediction is that people will in great numbers

  a) look away, or
  b) normalize it with pseudo-rationalist blather

Yes, like in many other cases. But it doesn't make it less dangerous, each new transgression removes another set of brakes. The dynamics of crime are that the new cycle will be nastier than the last one. In a society where both communication, intel and policy is in the hands of a very small circle of powerful people, this insurrection might turn out to be too powerful to break.

It is complete insanity and the you have to wonder whether there are any adults left in the US political system.
bn-l•1mo ago
Over the last couple of years we just saw a country which appears to favoured above all by this US admin commit genocide of over hundred thousand people in addition to mass torture and mass rape of marginalised and impoverished people. So things that were unthinkable just recently are now reality.
moogly•1mo ago
"Just recently"? Try about 80 years; arguably longer. Some of us have tried to speak out for decades and decades, but just been dismissed as antisemites.
