> Nader’s main beef is that pencil erasers quickly dry out and become useless, dessicated nubs. He also insists that erasers have gotten worse over the years. > “Before you use a third of it, over time the eraser goes hard on you. Not only is it useless, it smudges and backfires,” Nader told me way back in a 2023 interview.

I agree. The majority of pencil erasers are absolute rubbish.

I have had the same rubber (I can say that, I'm English) for about 10 or 15 years. It is one of those plasticy ones, it is long and thin (quiet at the back there) and slides out of a tube (I won't tell you again) like a thick propelling pencil. Not sure if you can still buy them, but making a rubber that lasts is perfectly possible.

I wasn't aware that an eraser became worse over time.

It's my recollection that if it's a small red cylinder on the end of a pencil, it's terrible from start to finish.

Compared to the standalone erasers (whitish and around the size of a thumb) which were always good.
