This is absolute insanity. The fact that there are still some people on HN that support him is absurd.
andsoitis•2w ago
> The fact that there are still some people on HN that support him is absurd.

Some people support ideas rather than blindly support or disapprove of an individual. Too many people support him blindly. Too many people dismiss all of his ideas blindly.

timeon•2w ago
Sure people can lie to themselves, but they are still supporting this if they are not opposing him.

Same with the Epstein files.

andsoitis•2w ago
> they are still supporting this if they are not opposing him.

This is precisely the problem, if I interpret your response correctly. Just because someone doesn't oppose all ideas that someone has doesn't mean they support all ideas coming from that person.

You can support some ideas and oppose others. Blindly opposing someone on all fronts without critical consideration and some reflection on the idea itself is not very strategic or practical.

In fact, it can undermine your own opposition because you will find out very quickly that you oppose common-sense ideas and people will look at you like you're a little crazy.

People have the tendency to dig themselves into an ideological hole.

It happened in my country with the communist party and Stalin.

> Too many people dismiss all of his ideas blindly.

Genuinely, please list a few ideas of his that are actually good.

I’m on the outside, but I’ve never seen a single speech or talking point of his and thought “yeah, that’s a good idea”

andsoitis•2w ago
> Genuinely, please list a few ideas of his that are actually good.

> I’m on the outside, but I’ve never seen a single speech or talking point of his and thought “yeah, that’s a good idea”

Here are some:

- Challenging China on Trade & Industrial Policy

- NATO Burden-Sharing Pressure (forced EU to take defense spending commitment seriously and increase defense budgets)

- Criminal Justice Reform (reduced mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenses, expanded rehab and early-release programs)

- Operation Warp Speed

- Energy Independence Focus

- Deregulation Emphasis, especially for small business

- Abraham Accords

etc.

I also have a list of ideas that I think are terrible.

Point is to not be blind to what’s happening as much as possible. Difficult because you have to pick your news sources carefully and even then critically evaluate the reporting. There’s also emotional component etc.

testing22321•2w ago
Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

> - Challenging China on Trade & Industrial Policy

And how’s that working out? China is booming right now, the US is spiralling towards massive recession.

> NATO Burden-Sharing Pressure (forced EU to take defense spending commitment seriously and increase defense budgets)

Trump increased the war budget. He’s spending more money, not less. This is not helping the us.

> Criminal Justice Reform (reduced mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenses, expanded rehab and early-release programs)

Can you link to a source where he has actually done that, not just said he would.

> Operation Warp Speed

At the same time as advocating not taking vaccines

> Energy Independence Focus

What? He’s stealing oil from Venezuela, and cancelling solar and wind project. The us energy is fucked.

> Deregulation Emphasis, especially for small business

Again, can you link to actual steps taken, or just talk.

> Abraham Accords

Gimme a break. Full on genocide right now, and he keeps claiming he negotiated peace.

The unibomber had some good ideas, doesn’t mean he should be president.

The fact he was elected by a democratic voting system only shows how flawed American Democracy is.
testing22321•2w ago
Decades of very poor education leads to terrible decision making.
andsoitis•2w ago
That’s a false conclusion in my opinion.

Trump was elected because the Republican and Democratic establishment haven’t been serving the citizenry adequately for an extended period of time.
