Wait...

The team all left in a short period of time, and at a Debian conference nobody expressed an interest in stepping up?

This is the sort of thing I'd ordinarily be tempted to take part in, but those two facts are HUGE red flags. It sure looks like something's up. I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole without a better understanding of what's going on.
