Lightweight tools vs. enterprise RMMs: what works for small teams?

A lot of infrastructure tooling today seems optimized for large organizations. That makes sense — those buyers have budget and compliance needs.

But I’m not convinced that same tooling works well for smaller teams.

In my experience, “enterprise-grade” often comes with:

long onboarding

dense dashboards

configuration you touch once and forget

agents that do far more than you need

For teams without dedicated ops staff, this creates friction rather than leverage.

I’ve been thinking about whether lightweight, focused tools age better for small teams — not as temporary solutions, but as deliberate design choices. I tried to write down that perspective here:
