Howie is an early-stage startup building an AI platform for the architecture and engineering industry. We help enterprise teams reuse knowledge from past projects (documents, drawings, revisions) to reduce costly rework during planning and pre-construction.

We already have a live product used by paying customers across Europe and are working closely with leading architecture firms. Backed by Pi Labs and DAR.

We’re hiring a senior hands-on backend engineer to help design and evolve the core infrastructure of our system: multi-tenant architecture, ingestion pipelines, hybrid search, and large-scale document indexing.

Key technical challenges: • multi-tenant enterprise architecture • hybrid search (Postgres + Elasticsearch + vector DB) • large-scale document ingestion pipelines • versioned data models for complex engineering projects • scaling to millions of indexed regions and embeddings • reliability and performance under enterprise workloads

Requirements: • 8+ years backend engineering experience • strong systems design skills • experience with distributed systems and async pipelines • PostgreSQL expertise • experience with Elasticsearch/OpenSearch or similar

Nice to have: vector databases, retrieval systems, document processing, ML infrastructure.

Small team (currently <10 engineers), high ownership, real production users.

Location: Vienna or remote within Europe Comp: competitive salary + meaningful equity
