A lot of computer owners do not fit into any hardware capability or software capability bracket. A lot do; video/photo professionals, developers and gamers tend to know what hardware and software they need to support their work. But the majority of computer owners buy a computer to do iPad-level office busywork like checking emails and formatting PowerPoint slides.
This is why Windows and ChromeOS remain dominant, despite being profoundly terrible OSes. They are cheaper, and Apple fumbled every opportunity to elevate the iPad into a cost-competitive computer that might subsume that market. A $600 Mac threatens to cannibalize the Macbook Air market more than it endangers the PC.
