My machine completely blacked out after rebooting to update. That was quite a shock.
I managed to fix it by forcing it into DFU mode (it required quite a few attempts), begging a family member to let me use Apple Configurator on their Mac, and reviving using the 15.6.1 IPSW. I'm not sure everyone has my resources or luck.
I've never had to do crap like this in the 21 years I've owned a Mac. Apple's software team is in the gutter these days.

I was going from 15.7.4 to 15.7.5, not to a new major version like Tahoe.
