I live in Wānaka, a ski town about an hour from Queenstown, and locals aren't the happiest with the growth here. Peter Thiel was actually blocked from building a house on lake Wānaka over concerns it was disrupting the landscape.

Overall, these investments don't seem to be bringing any kind of tech industry businesses to this region. It's still highly dependent on tourism, and when I was looking for work here, over several months, 0 SWE jobs in Queenstown or Wānaka appeared on SEEK.co.nz.

I guess it is an influx of money into the national economy, but it doesn't seem to be creating any kind of dynamic start up scene anywhere, let alone in Queenstown itself.
