The very last line hits it on the head.

"Almost no jugglers get rich. Many work other jobs on the side. Salaries at Cirque start at $50,000, which is decent for the circus world but hardly cozy. "

Look at Penn and Teller, yes, Penn juggles but that wasn't were the money was made. It was in making a complete act that could be sold and toured.

This brings up the question of why some experts in their field become public icons while other fade away. I believe it comes down to relentless self promotion. Some people have that ability while at the same time not overdoing it. Albert Einstein was brilliant. But he became a public icon because of his ability to promot himself. He was able to make the most out of the publicity he received. Which made him so famous that decades after he died we all know who he was. Many of us don't really know why, other than he was smart, but we know him. There have been many really smart people but we don't know them as much as Einstein. Where ever you look you will see examples like him.
