> The broad trend is that cities in both Europe and America are safer, friendlier and more fun than a generation ago. That is something everyone should be able to celebrate.

What an absolutely boring way of ending an article... This, to me, is more important:

> On this basis, Chicago is by far the most deadly city in the data. In 2024 it had 587 homicides, a rate of 22 per 100,000 residents, or 2.7 times that of the next-worst offender, Los Angeles. The average rate among ten European cities is 1.7 per 100,000 people.

And with that we have the answer to the title; a very unsurprising "yes".

It's not that boring an ending as basically the same people that are portraying Europe as descending into some Mad Max with Muslims dystopia are saying the same about American cities getting worse and worse.

I've seen at least one such commentator try to suddenly flip from "things are getting worse, the statistics saying otherwise are woke lies to a new narrative of Trump has saved us all by reducing crime with Fascism, yeah more fascism please!" but mostly they are sticking with what they know and relying on news sensationalism to scare old people about every crime on the planet and accusing fact checkers of being part of the conspiracy against them.
