The data are mostly made up. On the board you can find all pivots, description of “why” it happened, target/completed dates, decisions log, on some milestones confidence rate or how many times date has been moved.
I built a roadmap management tool that keeps “why” your plan changed and branches the plan instead of overwriting it. The product recently launched and has 15 users on Pro Trial plan.
The problem was that I invested to the early-stage project, which changed directions several times, without keeping track of changes. The project continued development, but it was always unclear why certain decisions were made and where it was moving.
The solution was to make a visual tool with main mechanic to keep “why” pivots were made and never rewrite the original plan. To make it real you can:
- Make an original roadmap with milestones that keep the title, description, target date, status and confidence
- Branch the main roadmap when you need. To keep the reason behind every pivot, it requires writing down some notes, with at least 20 characters.
- The original roadmap stays on the canvas forever and you can always return to it and find all data, nothing disappears
I decided to force users to make decision log on every pivot because this is the main value the roadmap can provide.
