How much time should be spent marketing a website tt can be built in 45 minutes?

I made gangbid.lol in about 45 minutes.

It's a pretty simple site, and that's kind of the point. I can throw something like this together very quickly, but getting people to actually use it seems like the much harder part.

So I'm wondering how much time you would spend on distribution for something like this.

If a product takes 45 minutes to build, does it make sense to spend 10 hours posting about it, trying different channels, talking to users, etc.? At some point the marketing effort is obviously going to be much larger than the effort required to build the thing.

My usual tendency is to just build the next idea instead. I'm wondering if that's actually a bad habit.

How do you guys decide when something is worth pushing further vs. just moving on to the next thing?

I'm also curious if anyone here has a rule of thumb for this.

Back in the 1990s when I was a hippie and really kind of anti-commercial I found a textbook on marketing that define marketing is the interface of the consumer and I I still like that definition.

So seen that way marketing starts before you even make the product and involves having a good idea of who your consumer is and what their needs are and how you’re gonna reach that person.

Even if you see marketing as just sales and promotion, it takes a phenomenal amount of effort to be successful at all so that’s the question you have to ask I mean, is the juice worth squeeze?

devisious•1d ago
Yeah, exactly. I'm not really building things just for the sake of building them — I do believe in the idea. I was more curious about how much time and money it makes sense to invest in distribution from an efficiency perspective.

I wanted to hear some more experienced perspectives on this, so thanks for sharing yours. Really helpful.
