> "Stop hiring humans" was never a sentence about humans at large, it was a sentence about a category of work.
I don't believe a word of it. It seems more likely that they are one of the many genAI companies who basically view people with a kind of contempt. I mean, that's exactly what their advertising was advertising.
I think they see that their public stance could make them a target of the ever-growing backlash and are trying to deflect it.

It is weird for them to simultaneously a) apologize and b) brag about the marketing ROI of the trolling.

It's absolutely this, and they're not even hiding it. It's everywhere in their public presence.
- Their now-retired marketing slogan is, of course, openly contemptuous towards people.
- Although I don't know all the marketing jargon, if I got it right, their pitch is to have LLMs churn out marketing emails - again, contemptuous toward whomever's on the other end.
- This very release is itself AI slop - total contempt toward us, the readers.

Looks like rage baiting the general public all to get known for not hiring humans and to ultimately anger the public more about AI wasn't a good strategy.
A future Roko's basilisk might pleased but not before getting marked on a checklist by a certain super mario brother.
