yamtam brings the entire NYC-area mass transit network together on a single, fast, offline-capable map — subways, LIRR, Metro-North, NJ Transit rail and buses, PATH, AirTrain JFK, the Roosevelt Island Tram, NYC Ferry, the Staten Island Ferry, MTA buses and the regional suburban bus networks of the tri-state area, plus live Citibike docks and free-floating VEO and Lime bikes and scooters.
The origin story:
I wanted to provide updated accessibility info at a given subway station, which escalators and elevators were working or out, which this does. But before long, I had grandiose ideas of other valuable features:
- Real-time arrival (and tracks for MNR, LIRR, NJT) data with destination or countdown clock views
- Full train or bus data, including positions
- Service alerts and weather alerts
- Bathrooms, wikipedia pages, ProjectSubway complex renderings, neighborhood maps, and more
- Widget support (using Glimpse, links on any stop) and Watch support (text yourself a link to https://yamtam.nyc/watch.html)
- Transfers between systems and other trains
- Basic (but improving) navigational data
- CLI tool (pip install yamtam) in case you need this info in your terminal or for your LLM agents
And the most important:
- Once you add this as a Home Screen app and load it up once, you can put your phone in airplane mode and the app will keep working (of course, if sudden acts happen, it won't know) for 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the system. Or if the cellular connectivity is not good, it will keep using whatever data it last pulled (and let you know).
I built this on the shoulders of the MTA and great work (Patrick Weaver, Sunny Ng, etc), tools and ideas, with a healthy dose of Qwen3.8 Flash Next. It runs on AWS and works fairly well. I'm always up for feedback and ideas to change or improve it.
