Ask HN: Is Observability Broken for You?

1•tmach32•41m ago
I'm curious if anyone feels like observability is in bad shape.

When I was an SRE, around 2022 we got asked to dramatically lower our DataDog costs, which mostly meant a lot of sampling and fighting over retention. We also had to turn off some features we liked like container monitoring.

It seems like observability is priced like interest rates are still 0%. This matters because, for example, if you are the leader of a platform team trying to get web devs to add observability, it's a tough sell because it's expensive.

Are things just fine on your team wrt observability? Or are you doing a lot of sampling/poor retention to save costs?
