I built Thok because I missed the sound of a mechanical keyboard when working on a MacBook. A few things I cared about:
– It’s 296 KB and lives in the menu bar.
– It runs in the App Sandbox with no network entitlement at all. No accounts, no analytics, no update checks.
– It needs Input Monitoring, but only reads physical key codes, not characters, to pick and position a sound. Nothing is stored.
– Each keystroke is panned across your audio output to roughly where the key sits on the built-in keyboard.
$0.99 on the Mac App Store, macOS 14+, Apple Silicon.Happy to answer questions about how it works.
