How did she get the money to buy it back? I understand it’s from the non-profit, but how did they get the money?
antisthenes•15h ago
You realize that's probably peanuts compared to what she walked away with in the divorce?
testbjjl•15h ago
Is this speculation or do you have a source?
notjoemama•15h ago
Sounds like a normal conversational speculation to me. I simply searched for her name + divorce. The Yahoo Finance article I read said there was a prenuptial in place but they settled for an undisclosed amount. At the time he was worth $30B so a $350M buyout for 23andme is probably in a reasonable assumption of what the settlement could have been. Conversationally speaking of course. We don't know either way.
iamwil•1h ago
No. I have no idea. It's an honest question how people managed to find the money to buy it back.
getcrunk•16h ago
Oh wow. Sold it to her self and got off on her debts. America!
solardev•16h ago
Hasn't she been trying to buy it for a while, only to keep getting rebuffed?

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/23andMe

> In an attempt to regain control, Wojcicki made an initial bid in February 2024 to take 23andMe private, offering $2.53 per share in a joint bid, but it did not proceed.[39] In July 2024, Wojcicki offered 40 cents each for all outstanding shares not already owned by her directly or through affiliates.[40] The proposal was rejected by a committee set up to evaluate options for the company's future,[41] and in September the seven independent members of the board of directors all resigned.[42] The company subsequently filed with the SEC indicating that it was no longer open to third-party acquisition offers.[40] Users were concerned about the security of their genetic data, and were trying to delete it from the company's archives only to find out that it holds onto the data for three years before deleting to comply with "legal obligations".[43]

> In January 2025, 23andMe declared that it would need additional liquidity to fund operations, and was actively exploring strategic alternatives including a potential sale of the company.[45] Wojcicki made a third offer of 41 cents per share in March 2025.[39]

-------------

I don't know a lot about her, but she co-founded 23andme and has been tied to it ever since. Maybe it's her baby?

> Maybe it's her baby?

Better do a DNA test to confirm.

Well it's the "TTAM Research Institute's" baby now. They have an office above a UPS store and not much of a website.

There's a lot of scrutiny in this kind of deals. It's just not that easy.

Not how chapter 11 works. All debtors will be paid or assumed. They have to agree to the plan.
teruakohatu•15h ago
Wojcicki's non-profit "TTAM Research Institute" domain was registered last month [1] and the current Powered by GoDaddy landing page went online around 5 June. [2]

Anyone know if its a legitimate non-profit or one of the "sort of" non-profit?

From the press release [3] ...

> TTAM Research Institute (“TTAM”), a nonprofit public benefit corporation based in California ... The TTAM Research Institute is a nonprofit medical research organization dedicated to helping scientists and non-scientists join together to unravel the mysteries of DNA - the code of life. TTAM believes everyone should have the opportunity to access their individual genetic code and be empowered to contribute it to scientific research. The TTAM Research Institute was founded and is led by Anne Wojcicki.
