I will simply not be caught dead in that country.
markoman•2mo ago
Do you mean we're NOT the greatest country in the world anymore?
protocolture•2mo ago
I wouldnt agree that you were the greatest ever, but currently I would rather take my chances with the Taliban.

This is a scary time for American citizens. At least the non-citizens typically still have a backup home abroad, whereas the citizens have everything invested domestically. It's still just the first year of the presidency.
collingreen•2mo ago
The real fear is that this is the first year of something much worse than a presidency.
zem•2mo ago
having a backup home abroad does you no good if you are trafficked to a labour camp in some random hellhole country
IAmBroom•2mo ago
Yes, you can imagine bad things.
Volundr•2mo ago
I mean we watched those things happen already. The whole CECOT thing was just a few months ago.
OutOfHere•2mo ago
Which US citizen got shipped to CECOT?
Volundr•2mo ago
None. But the thread isn't about US citizens, so I'm not sure why you'd ask.
cmxch•2mo ago
As a citizen, not really scared at all. Actually relieved.

I’d rather have aggressive enforcement than lax enforcement.

OutOfHere•2mo ago
Aggressive enforcement of what exactly? Of picking targeted citizens up from the street without a court order to arrest them? Because that's what's happening. It's not enforcement; it's lawlessness and kidnapping. It's what the Nazis did - they made citizens disappear.

> The student, a high school intern at Superior Court, was reportedly detained by the agents outside the Licht Judicial Complex on Benefit Street.

>Superior Court Judge Joseph McBurney insisted the agents had the wrong person. It was not until ICE verified their information and admitted the intern was not their intended target that he was released.

A kid, detained, and released after... due diligence.

>Multiple sources told Target 12 that Rhode Island sheriffs earlier noticed someone taking photos of the intern inside the courthouse and in Superior Court Judge McBurney’s courtroom. When approached, the individual identified himself as an ICE agent and was told to abide by standard courthouse rules, and to stop taking pictures.

>The intern was reportedly shaken, so McBurney offered to drive him home. ICE agents then surrounded the judge’s car and demanded everyone to exit the vehicle, threatening to smash in the windows if they did not comply.

>Dana Smith, Head of Security Operations for R.I. Superior Court, confronted the agents and told both the judge and the intern to stay inside the car. After an argument, ICE confirmed they had misidentified the teen and left. The intern was released once his ID was checked.

Holy shit. Straight up random profiling to photo ops at your workplace to violent abduction.

There are parallels between 1930s Nazi Germany's Gestapo, 1980s East Germany's Stasi and today's American ICE agents. They all can disappear people without due process of law.

Seems like the current administration are only paying lip service to the law and most importantly the Constitution.
