Show HN: Jordle – Japanese Furigana Practice

https://jordle.io
11•qmarchi•1mo ago
I was talking with a friend (@finnvoid) about how we could make it easier to practice their hiragana and katakana reading while they are living in Japan. After some quick basic idea-crafting with Gemini, they took it and ran with to, building "Jordle" a Wordle-esque tool to help them (and you) learn your furigana.

Playing is easy, your goal is to transliterate the shown characters into the romaji (romanization). Pick between the two character sets (hiragana and katakana) or both to practice.

Data is local to the device, so it's pretty snappy and technically works offline.

We'll probably be hanging out in the comments for a bit if people have questions or comments!

AI generated app, Ew. Also, furigana isn't what you think it is. Furigana is specifically the READING AID ABOVE KANJI. What you really meant was just "kana".

Nice work! I enjoyed it.

On mobile (safari) there’s some quirk where the UI is allowed to zoom in, maybe in response to what is perceived as a double tap, but is just me typing on the keyboard.

Interesting concept.

I've been doing the same kind of drill with ChatGPT. The disadvantage is the interface, but I can direct it to focus on what I'm learning or want to reinforce, etc.
