And this is why California went from a huge surplus to huge deficit in a matter of years. $5M to each black adult, who thinks of this stuff? Oh right, black Californian politicians and lobbies lining their own pockets.
4gotunameagain•10h ago
Because the black americans are $5M less well off than if they had stayed in Africa, or ?

Don't get me wrong, slavery was (and is) a terrible thing that stains humanity. But at some moment we have to move on.

I fully believe that this continuous racial tension is fueled by US' enemies (e.g. could be Russia).

There was much less racial tension some years ago. And gender tension.

It’s a cheap way out: you distribute a lot of money and then claim it’s all been compensated. I’ve always liked the idea of encouraging minority members to study law. It’s much harder to ignore systemic injustice when there’s a sufficient number of potential victims familiar with the legal code.
xvedejas•10h ago
Only to black residents as of 2025? Intentionally ignoring the black former residents who cannot afford to live in their city anymore?

"The measure does not allocate any initial city dollars, a move that may have helped secure support from the board's moderates after repeated years of city budget shortfalls. Instead, the ordinance establishes a framework to receive future contributions - whether through city appropriations or private donations."

"Walton acknowledged funding remains the central challenge, but expressed optimism about tapping foundations, corporations, and individuals to support the effort."

Is the $5m an upper limit?

almosthere•10h ago
Idiots. The thing that fuels racial tensions is things like this NOT getting passed. It's never going to get passed, so all this is doing is making people mad. and I think that is on purpose.

I wish the young people of today could have experienced the 90s.

OutOfHere•2h ago
Is it the city budget that's funding the "African American Reparations Advisory Committee"? If so, the city dwellers already are paying too much, enough to fund waste, and should move out both their residences and businesses.
