Show HN: I built a tiny daemon that reminds me what matters

12•amitdawar•2w ago
I didn’t want another app, notification, or dashboard. I wanted a subtle daily reminder through something I already look at all the time — my desktop.

So I built a small local-first daemon that updates the wallpaper once a day with a message aligned to my goals.

Site: https://gen-wal.laptopserver.dev GitHub: https://github.com/nicemit/gen-wal

Would love feedback.

Your site says "Runs locally. No accounts. No tracking. Easy to remove." but the code (in src/providers) has backends to remotely-hosted LLMs. So is it really local?
amitdawar•1w ago
Hi there!

You’re right, thanks for pointing it out.

Gen-Wal itself always runs locally (no accounts, no telemetry), but by default it uses Pollinations for text/image generation to keep setup friction low.

Local providers (llama.cpp / Ollama) are supported and can be enabled explicitly.

I’ve updated the site copy and documented this more clearly here: https://gen-wal.laptopserver.dev/documentation.html#customiz...
