The funny thing is that the US is self-sufficient in oil and natural gas. More than self-sufficient. The US is a major exporter. There are some problems with pipelines being in the wrong place and refineries not being configured for the correct grade of oil, but those problems could be fixed. It would require a consistent level of industrial effort that seems difficult to achieve in the US today.
