Show HN: SolidSync – Poorman's Solidworks PDM

https://github.com/baggiest/solidsync
2•Baggie•10h ago
Hello HN! I'm a software engineer trapped at work with 13 mechanical engineers (imagine the smell).

This is a self-hosted part manager, you get to see the versions of a part, set status like "DONT WORK UPON TS", see the HEAD of a part like we take for granted in software. you could rightfully call it a poorman's early dropbox with status updates.

no login no auth and consequently kinda no security, it's made to be hosted locally with the people you usually trust to be barefeet around, so in most cases, not me.

spinning up a server takes less than 90 seconds it will be TURBO INSECURE without the https setting so only use the http serving when running locally

"is this vibe coded slop" "is that ham processed" well it's practical foss slop.

This app lacks alot funcionality compared to the paid options and on a spec sheet its kinda worse than any PDM/PLM on the market

but it's possibly the most resillient system in its niche, you own everything, the engine is secretly git, everyfile has its hash as their "part id", oldschool software, no bs, as mission critical as an electron app can be

The local hosting system was heavily inspired by stronghold HD and minecraft. this was made to withstand the on-going war of Iran, so it'll last probably forever in a peaceful western country

I NEED YOUR FEEDBACK if you're someone who deals with PDM's or mechanical engineering or anyother engineering I need your feedback to turn this into great user experience

they say if you're not embarrased of your first version then you've shipped too late and I'm glad to say I'm very embarrased. love u bye
